- Time Control: Each player receives 10 minutes per game with a 5-second increment applied from move one throughout.
- Qualification Rule: The top four finishers from the round-robin advance to the semifinals. Players finishing fifth through eighth compete in placement and tiebreak matches.
Knockout Stage (February 14-15)
- Semifinals Format: Played on February 14, the semifinals use a best-of-four games structure between qualified players from the group stage.
- Final Match: The championship final takes place on February 15, with the winner crowned the first-ever FIDE Freestyle Chess World Champion.
- Knockout Time Control: Players receive 25 minutes per game with a 10-second increment per move, providing additional thinking time for deeper preparation.
What is Freestyle Chess?
- Definition: Freestyle Chess is another name for Chess960, also known as Fischer Random Chess, a variant invented by former World Champion Bobby Fischer.
- Starting Position Rule: Back-rank pieces are arranged in a semi-random order before each game, creating unique starting configurations that differ from the standard chess setup.
- Why It Matters: Because starting positions change each game, players cannot rely on memorized opening theory, eliminating preparation-based advantages that dominate classical chess.
- Game Impact: Every player must depend entirely on calculation ability, creativity, and deep chess understanding from the very first move, producing dynamic and unpredictable games.
